고타마 싯다르타 석가모니 부처님의 말씀

“단순히 들었다고 해서 무엇도 믿지 말라. 많은 사람들이 말하고 소문을 낸다고 해서, 종교 서적에 기록되어 있다고 해서 그대로 믿지 말라. 당신의 선생들과 장로들의 권위로 그저 믿지 말라. 여러 세대에 걸쳐 전해 내려온 전통을 믿지 말라. 그러나 관찰하고 분석한 후에 어떤 것이 이성과 일치하고 모든 사람의 선과 이익에 도움이 된다는 것을 알게 되면 그것을 받아들이고 그에 따라 생활하라.” “Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it. Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many. Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books. Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders. Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations. But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it.”

"행복에 이르는 길은 없다. 행복이 곧 길이다." “There is no path to happiness: happiness is the path.”

"당신이 진정으로 자신을 사랑한다면 다른 사람을 해치지 않을 것이다." “If you truly loved yourself, you could never hurt another.”

“당신의 분노 때문에 벌을 받지 않을 것이다. 당신은 당신의 분노에 의해 벌을 받을 것이다.” “You will not be punished for your anger; you will be punished by your anger.”

“화내지 않음으로써 화난 자를 이겨라. 선으로 악인을 정복하라. 관대함으로 인색한 자를 이기고, 진실을 말함으로 거짓말쟁이를 이겨라." “Conquer the angry one by not getting angry; conquer the wicked by goodness; conquer the stingy by generosity, and the liar by speaking the truth.

“전투에서 천 명을 정복할 사람보다 더 위대한 사람은 단 한 사람, 즉 자기 자신을 정복할 사람이다. 남 보다 자신을 이기는 것이 낫다." Greater in battle than the man who would conquer a thousand-thousand men, is he who would conquer just one — himself. Better to conquer yourself than others.

“꽃 한 송이의 기적을 분명히 볼 수 있다면 우리의 삶 전체가 바뀔 것이다.” “If we could see the miracle of a single flower clearly our whole life would change. ”

“너희 자신 외에는 어디에서도 성소를 찾지 말라.” “Do not look for a sanctuary in anyone except your self.”

“완전히 혼자 존재하는 것은 없다. 모든 것은 다른 모든 것과 관련되어 있다.” “Nothing ever exists entirely alone; everything is in relation to everything else.”

“미움은 미움으로 그치지 않고 사랑으로만 그친다. 이것이 영원한 법칙이다.” “Hatred does not cease by hatred, but only by love; this is the eternal rule.”

"순결함과 더러움은 자기에게 달려 있으니 남을 정결케 할 자가 없느니라." “Purity or impurity depends on oneself, No one can purify another.”

"진정한 사랑은 이해에서 태어난다." “True love is born from understanding.”

"변화 외에 영원한 것은 없다." “Nothing is forever except change.”

"날카로운 칼 같은 혀... 피를 흘리지 않고 죽인다." “The tongue like a sharp knife... Kills without drawing blood.”

“과거는 이미 지나갔고 미래는 아직 오지 않았다. 당신에게 인생은 한 순간뿐이며, 그것이 바로 현재이다." “The past is already gone, the future is not yet here. There's only one moment for you to live, and that is the present moment”

“선을 행하는 데 마음을 두라. 그것을 반복하라 그러면 기쁨이 충만할 것이다.” “Set your heart on doing good. Do it over and over again, and you will be filled with joy.”

"애착은 고통을 낳는다." “Attachment leads to suffering.”

 

“관대한 마음, 친절한 말, 봉사와 연민의 삶이 인류를 새롭게 하는 것이다.” “A generous heart, kind speech, and a life of service and compassion are the things which renew humanity.”

“하늘에는 동서의 구분이 없다. 사람들은 자신의 생각으로 구별을 만들고 그것을 사실이라고 믿는다.” “In the sky, there is no distinction of east and west; people create distinctions out of their own minds and then believe them to be true.”

“반석이 바람에 흔들리지 않는 것 같이 지혜 있는 자는 칭찬이나 비난에도 흔들리지 않는다.” “Even as a solid rock is unshaken by the wind, so are the wise unshaken by praise or blame.”

“찬양과 비난, 득과 실, 쾌락과 슬픔은 바람처럼 왔다가 간다. 행복하려면 거대한 나무처럼 그들 가운데에서 쉬어라.” “Praise and blame, gain and loss, pleasure and sorrow come and go like the wind. To be happy, rest like a giant tree in the midst of them all”

“한 남자가 고타마 붓다에게 "나는 행복을 원합니다."라고 물었다. 부처님께서 말씀하시기를 "먼저 '나'를 제거하라, 그것은 에고이다, 그 다음 '원함'을 제거하라, 그것은 욕망이다. 이제 그대에게 남은 것은 '행복'뿐이다." “A man asked Gautama Buddha, "I want happiness." Buddha said, "First remove "I," that's Ego, then remove "want," that's Desire. See now you are left with only "Happiness.”

"결국, 당신이 얼마나 사랑했는지, 얼마나 부드럽게 살았는지, 당신에게 의미가 없는 것들을 얼마나 우아하게 버리는가, 이 세 가지만 중요하다." “In the end, only three things matter: how much you loved, how gently you lived, and how gracefully you let go of things not meant for you.”

“진리에 이르는 길에서 저지를 수 있는 실수는 단 두 가지뿐이다. 끝까지 가지 않는 것과 시작하지도 않는 것.” “There are only two mistakes one can make along the road to truth; not going all the way, and not starting.”

"가장 큰 기도는 인내다." “The greatest prayer is patience.”

"영적인 길에서 당신을 도울 사람을 찾지 못한다면, 혼자 걸으라. 어리석은 자와는 교제할 수 없다." “If you find no one to support you on the spiritual path, walk alone. There is no companionship with the immature.”

“누군가를 위해 등불을 켜면 당신의 길도 밝아질 것이다.” “If you light a lamp for somebody, it will also brighten your path.”

"과거에 연연하지 말고 미래를 꿈꾸지 말고 현재에 마음을 집중하라." “Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment.”

“너 자신의 등불이 되어라. 부지런히 해방을 실천하라.” “Be a lamp unto yourself. Work out your liberation with diligence.”

"너를 미워하는 자보다, 네 모든 원수보다, 무절제한 마음이 더 큰 해를 끼치느니라." “More than those who hate you, more than all your enemies, an undisciplined mind does greater harm.”

"선이 그 위의 순수함을 증명할 수 있으려면 악이 있어야 한다." “There has to be evil so that good can prove its purity above it.”

“조심하라. 부정적인 생각으로부터 마음을 지키라.” “Be vigilant; guard your mind against negative thoughts.”

“세상의 모든 사람이 당신을 제외하고 깨달음을 얻었다고 상상해 보라. 그들은 모두 당신의 교사이며, 당신이 완전한 인내, 완전한 지혜, 완전한 동정심을 배우도록 돕기 위해 각각 옳은 일을 하고 있다.” “‎Imagine that every person in the world is enlightened but you. They are all your teachers, each doing just the right things to help you learn perfect patience, perfect wisdom, perfect compassion.”

"얼마나 경이로운가! 얼마나 멋진가! 모든 것이 있는 그대로 완벽하다.” “How wonderful! How wonderful! All things are perfect, exactly as they are.”

“당신이 생각하는 대로 당신이 된다. 당신이 느끼는 것을 끌어당긴다. 당신이 상상하는 것을 당신이 창조한다.” “What you think, you become. What you feel, you attract. What you imagine, you create.”

"행복은 당신이 무엇을 가지고 있는지 또는 당신이 누구인지에 달려 있지 않고 전적으로 당신이 생각하는 것에 달려 있다." “Happiness does not depend on what you have or who you are, it solely relies on what you think.”

 

“그러므로 너희는 스스로 등불이 되고 스스로 피난처가 되라. 등불처럼 진리를 굳게 잡으라. 진리를 피난처로 삼으라. 자신 외에 다른 사람에게서 피난처를 찾지 말라. 그리고 스스로 등불이 될 자들은 외부의 피난처로 가지 말고 진리를 등불로 삼고 진리를 피난처로 삼아 가장 높은 곳에 이르게 될 것이다.” “Therefore, be ye lamps unto yourselves, be a refuge to yourselves. Hold fast to Truth as a lamp; hold fast to the truth as a refuge. Look not for a refuge in anyone beside yourselves. And those, who shall be a lamp unto themselves, shall betake themselves to no external refuge, but holding fast to the Truth as their lamp, and holding fast to the Truth as their refuge, they shall reach the topmost height.”

"네 마음을 지배하지 않으면 그것이 너를 지배할 것이다." “Rule your mind or it will rule you.”

“당신이 아무리 많은 거룩한 말씀을 읽고, 아무리 많이 말하더라도, 당신이 그것에 따라 행동하지 않는다면 그것이 당신에게 무슨 소용이 있겠습니까?” “However many holy words you read, however many you speak, what good will they do you if you do not act on upon them?”
